The stone coumn was unveiled in 1952 to commemorate the journey to Cape Nelson by Major Thomas Mitchell with Edward Henty in 1836. This was the southern most part of Mitchell’s journey of “Austtralian Felix”

 

The cain is located at Picnic Hill Reserve on the Caoe Nelson Road approximately 10 km from Portland and 3 km from the Cape Nelson Lighthouse.
