Cape Nelson
Named by Lieutenant James Grant in December 1800, after his ship HMS Lady Nelson.
Cape Nelson is a state park comprising of 243 hectares. The abundance of flora and fauna can be seen from the numerous walking tracks that wind through the park. There are three different types of vegitation n the park. These include; Soap mallee, heath and Wet Heath. Many native fauna can be found in the park including Echidnas, Red Necked Wallaby, various bird species and other native animals
Cape Nelson hosts on of the 17 remaining working lighthouses in Victoria. The light was officiqally lit on the 7th July 1884. The height of the structure is 32 metres. The light can be seen over 20 nautical miles out to sea. The Cape Nelson Lighthouse was the lat manned lighthouse in Victoria. It is now fully automated and functions as a navigation aid for sea and air traffic.
