Anzac Day
Since its humble conseption Portland’s ANZAC Day display has hounored service men and service women, not just locally but from around the world.
At a meeting held on the 19th February 1935 in the Portland RSL club rooms, it was moved by Captain David Hislop and seconded by Edward Butley, that we sould have small crosses made to place on the grass in front of the soldiers memorial monument at the Memorial Triangle.
Each cross was to have the name of a soldier who had died in active service, or in a camp, or who has died since when returned. A wreath would be placed under each cross.
From such humble beginnings, jhst a few crosses, the beautiful display it has grown into today is a testiment to the dedicated team of volunteers who put in so much time and effort. Not just on ANZAC Day but throughout the whole year.
